How we choose the books for your mystery box

How we choose the books for your mystery box

The mystery box is not a random book in pretty wrapping. It's a wager we make with you: that we can guess the story that will consume you, without ever having met you. And we only win that wager because behind it stands a process we treat almost religiously.

It all starts with a mood. Every month we sit over dozens of titles and ask ourselves one question: what should the reader feel when they close the final page? Sometimes the answer is "unable to breathe", sometimes — "desperate to live in that manor". Only then do genre and tropes come in.

Then we sift mercilessly. A book with a gorgeous cover but a weak middle? Out. A hyped title that's already on every second shelf? Out — the box has to surprise. We hunt for editions that feel special: hardcovers, sprayed edges, limited print runs, translations that sound like the original.

The final test is the simplest: would we gift this book to someone whose taste we respect? If anyone on the team hesitates, the title waits for the next box. Yes, that means we sometimes argue for hours. It's worth it.

So when you open the box and the book feels strangely familiar — as if someone peeked at your wishlist — know that it isn't magic. Just a lot of people who love the same stories you do, thinking long and hard. Well… maybe it's a little bit of magic too.
