There is a moment when an ordinary parcel becomes a gift: the second the knife slides through the tape and the lid comes off. We live for that moment. That's why packing at The Book isn't the last step of an order — it's a craft of its own, with rules, rituals and (we admit it) a mild obsession with detail.
It all starts at the long black table in the workshop. The book arrives inspected — corners, spine, edges — because nothing breaks the magic like a bent corner. Then comes the first layer: tissue paper the colour of night, folded by a method our colleague Iva guards like a family recipe.
Then come the small things that aren't small: the handwritten card listing the book's tropes; the dried rose pressed between the pages at just the right spot; the wax seal that every member of the team practises pouring for at least a week before we trust them with a real box. The red wax must drip exactly as much as it should — no more, no less.
The finale is the "shake test": the box is turned gently in every direction, and if anything shifts — we unwrap and start over. Sounds excessive? Maybe. But when a box travels across half of Bulgaria to reach you, it has to arrive the way it left: perfect.
So the next time you untie the black ribbon, know this — there was excitement on our side of the box too. A little ceremony, a little theatre, and a great deal of love for stories that deserve to be presented, not merely delivered.
